Description | Work completed by volunteer includes the following information:
Estill Newton was born in 1891 in Stranton, West Hartlepool, Durham to Anthony and Elizabeth Newton (nee Lythe). Anthony was born in Hartlepool but was in the Sailor's Orphanage, in Kingston upon Hull in 1871. He had been a railway clerk in West Hartlepool in 1891 but moved to Beverley by 1911 and was Station Master and Goods Agent. The 1911 census indicates that four children had been born to Anthony and Elizabeth, but only three were alive; Estill, Gertrude born 1889 and Elsie born 1899.
Estill signed a Short Service Attestation on 24 Dec 1915 in Beverley, to join the 21st Battalion Kings Royal Rifle Corps. He was a ship's draughtsman, aged 24, single, living at Station House, Beverley. He became Rifleman C12954 - joining at Helmsley, Yorkshire on 31 Dec 1915. Having served for 269 days he was 'missing' between the 13th and 17th Sep 1916; the records indicate he was killed in action on 15 Sep 1916. He is buried in the Thiepval Memorial Cemetery, Department de la Somme, Picardie, France - Plot - Pier and Face 13A and 13B. In 1920 a Plaque and Scroll were sent to Mrs E Newton, 32 Railway Street, Beverley - but with no effects. She also received the British War Medal and Victory Medal awarded to her son, on 19 Feb 1921.
