DescriptionWork completed by volunteer includes the following information

William was born in Hull in 1892, the son of William Ludwig Meyerhoff ( also Albert) and Margaret. Both were born in Hull but Albert's father was originally from Germany. He was a dock labourer and later did labouring work for the North Eastern Railway. William was brought up on Gillet Street, Albert Terrace, Hull.

William became a regular soldier, serving in the 2nd Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment. He was based at the Victoria Barracks, Beverley in 1911 and probably served with them in India. Upon the outbreak of war in Aug 1914 they returned to the UK, arriving in Dec 1914 and were then quickly deployed to the Western Front. The 2nd were sent to Belgium and took part in the fighting in the Ypres area in Apr 1915. It was at St Julien, that William was killed in action on 23 Apr 1915. William's body was not recovered and he is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres as well as on the East Riding Memorial in Beverley Minster. He was awarded the 1915 Star and the War and Victory Medals.

William's brother, Albert Victor Meyerhoff, born in 1889, was also in the army throughout the war, serving in the 5th Signals Company of the Royal Engineers. He worked on the NER as an assistant shunter.
