Ralph Sidney Musselwhite was born the 26 Apr 1892 in Norbury, Derbyshire and was baptized at Norbury parish church the 21 Jun 1892. He was the fifth child of Philomen and Emma Musselwhite (nee Berry). Philomen was a butler and by 1901 worked for the Burton family at Cherry Burton Hall. In 1911 the family still lived at Cherry Burton and Ralph was a reporter on a newspaper. According to an article that appeared in the Beverley Guardian in 1918 he served his apprenticeship with the paper and then moved to Manchester.

Ralph enlisted with the Royal Army Medical Corps after 1915 and served as a private. He was wounded by shell gas in 1918. He was awarded the British and Victory medals.

In 1918 Ralph married Amy Smith at Northwich, Cheshire. The couple had 2 daughters, Rosalind Amelia and Nancy Josephine. The family moved to Wellington, Shropshire where Ralph continued his career as a journalist. Ralph died on 4 Feb 1946 at Wellington aged 54, his wife Amy died in 1943.
