George Stephen Milson, the third child of William Carr Milson and his wife Ann Marie Cooper, was born in Beverley the 4 Dec 1893. George emigrated to Canada in 1907. The 1911 Canadian Census shows him lodging with Ivan and Emma Wallace in the district of Dundas, Ontario. He was a hatmaker.

George joined the 32nd Battery, Canadian Field Artillery on 4 Jan 1916 at Brockville, Ontario, his Attestation Paper for the Canadian Over-seas Expeditionary Force states that he had already served for two years in the 41st Regiment, Brockville, Ontario and gives his rank as Gunner but no other military details. He was sent to France, arriving there in Jul 1916. He was wounded in the left hip at Amiens in Jul 1918 and returned to England for treatment being discharged from hospital there on 8 Dec 1918. Gunner Milson was discharged from the Canadian Army on 24 Jan 1919 and returned to Brockville, Ontario.

George's father and his elder brother, William James Milson, served with the British Army during WW1. His father served with the Territorial Force, Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own (Yorkshire Regiment) while his brother, who was killed in action in 1916, served in the Yorkshire Regiment.

On 23 Aug 1919 George Milson married Rhoda Gertrude Lloyd, the daughter of Merrick and Eliza Lloyd. They continued living in Brockville after their marriage. George's parents, William and Ann Milson emigrated to Canada in 1922, moving to Brockville, and were joined there by his sisters Lily and Rosa in 1923.
