TitleResearch file number 910 relating to Charles Robinson Marshall (1899-1956)
Date2018
DescriptionWork completed by volunteer includes the following information

Charles Robinson Marshall was born at Bentley the 6 Mar 1899, the son of a joiner and wheelwright, Charles Robinson Marshall and his second wife, Margaret Ann (nee Milner). Charles was baptised the 4 Jun 1899 at All Hallows, Walkington.

Private 39335 Charles Robinson Marshall enlisted in the 9th Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Officially, until the Military Service Act of 10 Apr 1918 reduced the age by six months, the minimum age for service overseas was 19 years. Charles became a prisoner of war when he was captured on 26 Apr 1918, just ten days short of his 19th birthday, so he probably falsified his age on enlistment. He was sent to Germany, to the POW camps at Dulmen, Westphalia and Limburg, Hesse. After the Armistice, he was with a group of repatriated British prisoners who arrived at Dover on 29 Nov 1918. Charles was eventually discharged to the Reserve List on 13 Nov 1919.

Charles married Zoe Gray at St Nicholas' Church, Beverley on 3 Aug 1925. Charles and Zoe had six children, Zoe, Kenneth, June, Hazel, Alexander and Patricia. In 1939 the Marshall family lived at 29 Schofield Avenue, Beverley. Charles, like his father before him, was employed as a joiner.

Charles died on 26 Mar 1956, aged 56. He is buried in Queensgate Cemetery, Beverley.
