TitleResearch file number 937 relating to Tom Moody (1897-1971)
Date2018
DescriptionWork completed by volunteer includes the following information

Tom Moody was born in Beverley the 30 Jan 1897, the youngest of ten children born to John William and Annie Moody (nee Allison) of Beverley. They married in Beverley in 1873. Tom was baptised at Beverley Minster on 25 Mar 1910. The family lived at 38 Eastgate, Beverley. John was a housepainter and four of his sons, including Tom, also worked in the business. Two of Tom’s brothers worked as grooms whilst Fred, born in 1881, was a schoolmaster. Tom attended the Spencer School, Walkergate and at the age of fourteen undertook technical evening classes there.

Tom served as a private in the Northumberland Fusiliers, largely in the 1st/4th Battalion (part of 149th brigade and 50th Northern Division) but also some time in the 1st/7th and 1st/5th. Given his age he probably served initially in the Battle of Arras in France in Apr and May 1917.The Beverley Guardian of 12 May 1917 noted Tom had been wounded in the left foot, in unknown circumstances, and repatriated to military hospital in Dundee. The Beverley Guardian of 22 Jun 1918 reported Tom had been injured, wounded in the right foot and left hand and that he had once again been hospitalised in Dundee. By coincidence he was in the same ward and had the same matron! In addition he had been hospitalised again on the anniversary of his first admission. He recovered from his wounds and was disembodied in normal circumstances from the army. He was awarded the War and Victory medals.

Tom worked as a painter and decorator. On 12 Jun 1927 he married Elsie Graham at Beverley Minster. They had two children, Thelma born 1928 and Keith born 1933. Tom died in 1971 and Elsie died in 1991 in Beverley.
