Fred was born on 1 Mar 1896, and baptised 19 Mar 1896, the son of Charles and Eliza Millsom, he had three brothers Ernest, Charles and Herbert.

The 1901 census shows he was living with his grandmother Margaret Webster in Dog and Duck Lane, Beverley, in 1911 he was at the same address, still living with his grandmother.

Fred enlisted with the Northumberland Fusiliers, he was discharged after 29 days when it was found that he has lied about his age, that he was 17 not 18. Fred re-enlisted with the Yorkshire Regiment on 18 Apr 1915. He achieved the rank of Corporal. He was awarded the 15 Star, British and Victory medals.

Fred married Emily Nugent in 1919 in Newcastle. The 1939 register shows him still in Newcastle working as a warehouseman. Fred died in 1970.
