Ernest William Malam was born in Beverley the 5 Jun 1881, the only child of John and Catherine Malam (nee Smith and the widow of William Ward, a tailor of North Bar Within). Ernie had a step-sister, Gertrude Ward. John was a florist, fruiterer and shopkeeper and his mother was a milliner. Ernie married Lillie Lane, the daughter of James Robinson Lane, auctioneer and valuer, of 4 Hengate on 28 Sep 1911 at St Mary's Church, Beverley. They had no children.

Driver Ernest William Malam of the Royal Field Artillery enlisted on 12 Dec 1915. His photograph was published in the Beverley Guardian on 10 Feb 1917 and a brief text stated he was 'in France'. The Beverley Guardian of 17 Oct 1917 reported Driver E W Malam had been home recently on sick leave, he had been invalided to Lord Derby's War Hospital, Warrington, Cheshire the previous March 'where he has since been under treatment'. He subsequently transferred to the 7th Reserve Battery RFA (a home-based training establishment) and was eventually discharged due to sickness on 26 Mar 1919. Ernie was awarded the Silver War Badge, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

In 1939 Ernest and Lillie Malam were living at 4 Hengate, Beverley. Ernie worked as a shop assistant (provisions) and Lillie was an assistant schoolmistress and Deputy Commandant in the local Ambulance Office. Ernest died on 30 Jan 1954 aged 72, Lillie died on 20 Feb 1964 aged 81. They are both buried in St Mary's New Walk Cemetery, Beverley.
