John Calvert Montgomery was born in 1881 in Hull, the son of William and Emily, William was a letter press printer and Emily kept house for the family of Henrietta, Mabel, John, Edith, Kathleen, and William. John’s father William died in 1891 aged 43 and his mother married Henry Hulse a master builder in 1893. They had a son Leslie born in 1896. The family moved to Hornsea where his sister Edith became a school teacher.

In 1907 John married Ethel Matilda Stacey in Hull, Ehtel was from Nottingham and they made their home living with Ethel’s parents. John earned his living as an insurance agent but when he enlisted in 1915 was a chauffeur. His address at the time was 17 Claypole Road, Nottingham. A son Roy was born in 1910.

The Beverley Guardian of 1 Apr 1916 carried a photograph under the caption ‘serving at the front’ he was wearing a pith helmet which suggests that he was serving in hot climes in the Motor Transport Service. Each division of the army was allocated a certain amount of army transport and John served within this sphere.

In 1939 John and Ethel were still living in Nottingham where he was employed as a PSV driver. He died in 1966 aged 84.
