Samuel McCord enlisted in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers in Nov 1914 and embarked to the Balkans in Jul 1915. At the time of his enlistment he was residing at Old Scriven, Knaresborough in the home of Charles S Slingsby, a retired clergyman. His connection to Beverley was through his brother, in his service record he gave the address of his next of kin as 3 Parkfield, North Bar Street, Beverley, the address of his older brother, George Herbert McCord. They were both born in Ireland and the name of their father, given on Herbert’s marriage details, was Thomas who was a coachman. In the 1911 census returns Samuel was a footman at Scriven Park.
Samuel’s photograph appeared in the Beverley Guardian in Mar 1918, along with that of his brother. Samuel was reported to have been twice wounded and to be in hospital. Samuel was awarded the British War & Victory medals and the 15 Star.
