On 30 Apr 1903, Herbert McCord married Elizabeth Jane Woodhouse at the parish church of Scorborough. Herbert was a 26 years old coachman living in Scorborough, born in Dunmurray, Ireland, son of Thomas McCord, also a Coachman. Elizabeth Jane was born in London, daughter of William Robert Woodhouse, a hairdresser, and his wife Caroline (Rogers)

Herbert and Elizabeth were living in Scorborough when their daughter, Kathleen Carrie, was born in Dec 1904, she was baptised in Jan 1905. In 1911 the family were living in Beverley and Herbert was a chauffeur domestic. His service record states that he was employed by Mr Armstrong, North Bar Street, Beverley.

He enlisted in the ASC (Motor Transport) on 6 Mar 1917, and on 29 May 1917, embarked for France with ‘G’ Battalion, Heavy Branch, ASC. On 5 Jul 1917 “when camped on the road a shell burst near him, a piece of it hitting him on the back of the right thigh. He was taken to the CCS and 54th General Hospital BEF and transferred later to Netley Hospital”.

In addition to the injury to his thigh, Herbert was suffering from shell shock, he was admitted to Netley Hospital on 14 Jul 1917 where his wound was treated and his general condition was assessed. For the following fifteen months he was transferred to various hospitals until he was finally discharged in Oct 1918. He was awarded a disability benefit which he received until Mar 1920.

He was awarded a Silver Badge and the British War and Victory medals.

Herbert returned to civilian life and in the 1939 Register is shown living at 7 Pasture Terrace, Beverley and worked in a garage. He continued to live there until his death in 1951. He was survived by Elizabeth Jane who died in 1960.
