Frank Tindell Marson was born in Beverley in 1895, the sixth child of Frederick John Marson, a house painter, and his wife Sarah Ann. Fred and Sarah had nine children, seven boys and two girls. Frank was named after their first-born son who died in infancy. In 1893 the Marson family lived in Beckside, by 1901 they had moved to 50 Cherry Tree Lane which was to become their home until the Second World War. After leaving school, Frank served an apprenticeship with Edward Newham, Cycle and Motor Engineer of 7 Toll Gavel, Beverley. He subsequently found employment as chauffeur to Robert Albert Plimpton of Rectory Farm, Walkington.

Frank enlisted in the 9th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment, thence, as part of a draft, to the 8th Battalion, East Yorkshires of the 8th Brigade in the 3rd Division. Tthe Hull Daily Mail of 26 Aug 1916 reported Private Frank Tindell Marson embarked for France "on his 21st Birthday only a few weeks ago". The 8th Battalion, East Yorkshires arrived at the Somme from the Ypres Sector on 1 Jul 1916. Frank was rapidly promoted to Lance Corporal. On 13 Jul 1916, the 8th Battalion moved up to Caterpillar Wood Valley and at 3.25 am on 14 Jul the 8th Brigade, taking part in the Battle of Bazentin Ridge, attacked the German line between Bazentin Le Grand and Longueval. On 15 Jul 1916, Frank Marson was amongst those reported 'missing presumed killed'. His body was never found and his name is inscribed on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing.

Lance Corporal Frank Tindell Marson's name is recorded on the East Yorkshire Regiment Memorial in Beverley Minster and also on Beverley War Memorial. As an employee in the household of Mr Robert Plimpton at Rectory Farm, and therefore a resident of Walkington, he is also remembered on a plaque inside Walkington Church and on Walkington War Memorial.
