Arthur Mitchell was born in Beverley the 28 Sep 1884 and baptised at St Mary’s Church the 19 Oct 1884, one of four children born to James and Mary Mitchell. Arthur was a bricklayers apprentice after he left school but later became an assistant to George Oliver, a newsagent at 6 Wilbert Grove, where Arthur lodged. His mother and brother George, were living in Chantry Lane. He was a member of the Salvation Army and their band. He married Annie Taylor on 25 Nov 1914 in Huddersfield at the Brunswick Street Free Wesleyan Chapel. They lived in Beverley

Arthur served in the Yorkshire Regiment as a private, he left for France in early Feb 1916 having enlisted in 1915. He was wounded twice according to the Beverley Guardian. He returned to front line service and was still serving in late 1919. He was awarded the War and Victory Medals.

The 1939 Register lists Arthur as an assurance agent, living at 13 Priory Road, Beverley. He died in Hull, aged 83, in 1968. Annie died in 1954.
