Arthur was born in Braffords, a small hamlet near North Ferriby, the 7 Nov 1895, the oldest of three sons born to Arthur and Anne Moore. They were from Little Weighton and West Ella respectively. In 1901 they were living in Anlaby Common, but moved to Beverley before the outbreak of war, living at 8 Swaby’s Yard. Arthur senior died in 1915.

Arthur enlisted early in the war and as a private in the 1st/4th East Riding Regiment. He moved to the West Riding Regiment as a private in the 2nd Battalion which were in 12th Brigade and 4th Division. On 3 May 1917 the 2nd were involved in a costly action during the Battle of Arras at Roeux. Arthur was taken prisoner and spent the rest of the war in captivity. He was held at Limburg in Hesse and then further east in Friedrichsfeld POW camp and then in NW Poland in Scneidemuhl camp. According to an interview in the Beverley Guardian upon his return home in Jan 1919 he was given work duties and was treated roughly. Arthur was awarded the War and Victory Medals and the 1914-15 Star.

Arthur returned to Beverley and later moved to Hull, working as a rulleyman. He married Phyllis Ivison in 1929, they had three children, they lived in Florence Grove, Hull. Arthur died in Hull aged 68 in 1964.
