Charles was born in Hull the 26 Apr 1887 and baptised the 26 May 1887 at Christ Church, the son of John Thomas and Hannah Middleton (nee Husband). In 1911 he was recorded as a “laundry van driver”. On 4 Sep 1910 he married Eve Allison at St Nicholas’ Church, Beverley. Their only child, Arthur, was born the 18 Feb 1911, they lived at 3 Westwood Road

Charles enlisted in the Army on 22 Apr 1915. He joined the Royal Field Artillery, specifically the 32nd Hull Divisional Ammunition Column. He arrived in France to join the BEF on 31 Dec 1915. By Apr 1916 he had become an Acting-Bombardier, then a Sergeant. On 22 May 1917 he left frontline service, he remained in the RFA in the UK until Mar 1920. He was awarded the War and Victory Medals as well as the 1914-15 Star.

He returned to the motor transport industry and was recorded in the 1939 Register as being a “motor driver”. The family lived at 13 Tiger Lane, Beverley. Charles died aged 74 in 1961. Eva died in 1971.
