Frank Middleton was born in Southcoates, Hull the 30 Oct 1890, the first child of eight born to William and Mary Middleton, both of Hull. William was recorded as a “tripe dresser” in the 1891 census and the family lived in Kent Street. The family moved to Beverley in the mid 1890s. William was a labourer at the Grovehill shipyard in Beverley. The family lived in Eastgate and later Minster Terrace, Minstermoorgate. After the death of her husband in 1909 Mary worked as a charwoman. Frank was a tanner’s labourer in 1911 and by the time war broke out was working as a labourer, living in Wood Lane. On 21 Nov 1915 he married Lucy Eva Towse, at St Mary’s Church, Beverley, they lived with her parents at 70 Norwood.

Frank joined the 2nd Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment. They had been on the Salonika Front since 1915. Frank was awarded the War and Victory Medals.

Frank and Lucy continued to live at 70 Norwood, they had two children, William born 1920 and Mabel born 1923. In the 1939 Register Frank was recorded as a “public works contractor labourer”. He died aged 75 in May 1966 and was buried at the Queensgate Cemetery, Beverley on 15 May 1966. Lucy died in 1952.
