Charles Middleton was born in Hull the 22 Sep 1897 and was baptised the 27 Oct 1897, one of seven children born to William Wilkinson and Mary Middleton, both of Hull who married in 1876. William had been a sailor but is recorded in the 1901 census as a coal dealer and in 1911 as a coal trimmer.

Charles enlisted very early in the war and joined the 2nd Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment that had just returned from India. They arrived in France on 8 May 1915 and were put into action at the 2nd Battle of Ypres in Belgium and then at the Battle of Loos in France in Sep 1915. A photograph of Charles in the Beverley Guardian in early 1918 noted that he had been twice wounded. He recovered and left the army in late Jan 1919. He was awarded the 1915 Star and the War and Victory Medals.

Charles returned to Hull and in 1922 married in Eva Alma Leeman, born 1899 in Hull. They had three children, they lived at 11 Albert Avenue, Wellsted Street, the family home before the war. The 1939 register describes Charles as “ship coal turner”. He died in Hull in 1971 at the age of 74. Eva died in 1966.
