George William Milson was born in Beverley the 26 Feb 1888 one of thirteen children born to John Carr and Fanny Milson (nee Baker) who married in Beverley in 1885. Fanny was from Leconfield and John was from Sheffield. He was a shoemaker. The family spent a few years living in Beverley but spent much of the 1890s living in Market Weighton before returning to Norton Street, Cartwright Lane, Beverley and then Minstermoorgate. George attended Minster Boys’ School and in the 1901 census was recorded as being a grocer’s errand boy. By 1911 he was working at the Grovehill shipyard as a plater’s labourer. On 30 Oct 1910 he married Clara Williamson at Beverley Minster. Their first child, George Edward was born the 7 Jan 1911 and baptised at Beverley Minster on 15 Feb 1911. They had four other children and lived in Lurk Lane and later at 26 Beaver Road.

George enlisted in the Yorkshire Regiment on 4 Jan 1915 but was in the Reserve Battalion in the UK until 16 Sep 1916 when he joined the BEF in France. It would seem that he had served in the 5th as a territorial soldier for six years. George initially served as a drummer until 31 Aug 1917. He was hospitalised in Jan and Feb 1917 with “septic toes “. He was awarded the War and Victory Medals. After the end of the war George went absent without leave on 28 Dec 1918 until 3 Jan 1919. He was court-martialled and received 35 days of Field Punishment No.1 before being discharged.

George became a shoe and boot repairer, he continued to live in Beaver Road. George died in Dec 1968, aged 80, in Hull, and was buried at Queensgate Cemetery, Beverley on 17 Dec 1968. His wife Clara died in 1965.

George is remembered on the St Andrew Street Street Shrine along with his brother, John Henry Milson who served in the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.
