John Thomas Marin was born in Beverley in 1898, the eldest child of Patrick Marin, a shipyard worker originally from Newcastle on Tyne, and his wife Emma of Beverley.

John’s photograph was published in the Beverley Guardian, in the edition dated 14 Jul 1917 he is shown as “Sapper J. Marin, R.A.”. He was subsequently transferred to the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders where he attained the rank of Lance Corporal and served for the remainder of the war. A photograph of him in the Highlanders’ uniform appears in the Beverley Guardian 1 Feb 1919. At some point he was wounded in the leg. His Medal Index Card shows that he was awarded the British War and Victory medals.

John was employed as a ships riveter and he was a member of the Boilermakers’ Union. He married Nora Alice Chapman in 1920, they had a daughter, Barbara born 1923. In the 1939 Register, John and Nora are shown living in ‘Willsdon’, Queensgate Road, Beverley, and John is listed as a ships riveter.

At the time of his death, in June 1965, John and Nora were living in Victoria Road, Woodmansey, near Beverley.
