Arthur Mercer was born in Howden the 18 Aug 1898 and baptised the 8 Sep 1898, the son of Richard Kirkus and Sarah Mercer (nee Leadley) both originally from Beverley, where they had married in 1879. They lived in Howden and moved to Beverley in 1907.

Arthur enlisted in the Army on 2 Mar 1916 he served as a private in the Lincolnshire Regiment. Initially he was in the 15th Territorial Reserve Battalion but then transferred to the 1st Battalion, 62nd Brigade, 21st Division. He was seriously wounded in action on 20 Sep 1918. Arthur was sent to military hospital in Ipswich. He was discharged from the Army, due to his wounds, on 2 Sep 1919 and awarded a Silver Badge in addition to the War and Victory Medals.

After the war Arthur was employed in the grocery trade. According to the 1939 Register he lived at 158 Grovehill Road and was a grocer’s manager. He married Dora Adkins in 1922, she died in 1926. He married Gladys Lovell at St Nicholas’ Church, Beverley on 26 Jun 1935. Arthur died in Beverley on 27 Jun 1976 and was buried at Queensgate Cemetery three days later. Gladys died in 1991.
