Frederick Marrett was born in Hull the 31 Mar 1894 the son of Simon Thomas and Jesse Marrett. In 1891 they lived in Paradise Street, Hull and in 1901 in Cambridge Street. Thomas died in 1903 and in the following year Jessie married Tom Spence, landlord of the Sloop Inn, Beckside, Beverley. Frederick was employed as a plater’s labourer at the Grovehill shipyard.

In 1909 Frederick joined the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment as a territorial soldier but in the following year joined the 2nd Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment as a regular, stationed at the barracks in York. In Jan 1912 he bought himself out of the regular army. On 8 Jun 1915 he once again joined the TA, this time the Royal Field Artillery, the 2nd Northumbrian Brigade raised in the Hull area. He served in France in 1916 and 1917, latterly in the 201st, 203 and then 251st RFA Brigades. As a serving soldier he married Lilian Palmer on 18 Jul 1915 at Beverley Minster. On 26 Sep 1916, their first son, Frederick William, was born in Beverley. The family later moved to 6 Sparkmill Terrace, Beverley.

On 2 Dec 1917, whilst in France, Frederick received a serious gunshot wound to his right thigh. He was repatriated to the military hospital in Birmingham and his right leg was amputated. His rehabilitation took most of 1918 and on 16 November he was discharged from the army. He was awarded the War and Victory Medals.

He returned to Beverley. The 1939 Register shows that he was employed as a boot repairer living at 38/40 Beckside. His son Lennard was born in Dec 1919, twins Doris and Alan, in 1922 and Vera in 1930. Lilian died in in 1960; Frederick died in 1967, aged 72 and was buried in Queensgate Cemetery on 30 Mar 1967.
