TitleResearch file number 17 relating to Second Lieutenant George Philip Munson (1885-1915)
Date2018
DescriptionWork completed by volunteer includes the following information:

2nd Lieutenant George Philip Munson, York and Lancaster Regiment, regimental no 7857, formerly Staff Sergeant with the Army gymnastic staff, was born in 1885 in Kersey, Suffolk, the eldest child of George Munson, a farm worker and his wife Sarah.

A regular with the York and Lancaster Regiment, George was an instructor on the gymnastic staff and in about 1913 became attached to the 2nd East Yorkshire Regiment as Sergeant Instructor at Victoria Barracks, Beverley. He was reportedly a man of fine physique, an ideal gymnast and very popular among all whom came under his instruction.

At the outbreak of war he returned to the York and Lancaster Regiment with whom he was drafted to France in Aug 1914, serving as Company Sergeant Major. On 28 Apr 1915 while serving at the front he was appointed 2nd Lieutenant and he had the unusual distinction of remaining with his old regiment on receiving his promotion. He was killed in action on 7 Aug 1915.

He left a widow Lilla, whom he had married in 1909 while stationed in Pontefract, and three small children, who lived in Wood Lane, Beverley.
