Albert was born 1890 in Sporle, Norfolk, the son of James and Sarah Mann, one of six children. In 1891 his family moved to Beverley, living with Albert’s uncle in Keldgate. Albert married Clara Clements in Beeford the 13 Feb 1909. By 1911 they were living in Kirby Grindalythe, with a son Walter, their daughter Mary Ellen was born 1912. Albert was working as a beastman on a farm. Albert’s father died in 1910, and his mother married tom Fallowdown in 1915. In 1913 Albert signed up as a special reservist under Captain Mark Sykes, earning his one pound Waggoner’s bounty.

Albert served as a soldier in the 16th Battalion the West Yorkshire Regiment. In Apr and May 1917 they were part of the Arras offensive. Prisoner of war records show Albert was captured on the 3 May, but died 25 days later on the 28 May 1917. He is buried at Niederwehren Cemetery, Germany. Albert received the Victory Medal and the British Medal. Clara remarried in 1918

He is remembered on The East Riding Memorial in Beverley Minster and Hengate Memorial, St Mary’s.
