David Morley was born 23 Jan 1896 and baptised 1 Mar 1896 at St Mary's Church, Beverley. The 1911 England census shows that Corporal David Morley was the eldest son of David and Rosa Grace Morley, proprietors of the Beverley Arms Hotel, 25 Lairgate, Beverley. The 1911 census also shows David to had a sister Grace, born 1900. David was educated at the Beverley Grammar school. He then studied law and passed his intermediate exam in Law in Nov 1914.

David enlisted in the 12th Battalion of the Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders in Dec 1914 and served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders in Sep 1915. In 1916 he received a commission of 2nd Lieutenant with the East Yorkshire Regiment in Jul 1916. He killed in Arras, northern France on 16 Jun 1917 aged 21. He is buried at Bailleul Road East Cemetery, St. Laurent-Blangy. He is remembered on the Hengate War Memorial and on the East Yorkshire Regiment Memorial in Beverley Minster. A brother officer wrote 'He was a great favourite with all, owing to his invariably cheery disposition and his thoughtfulness for his men…'
