Private George H Moate, was born 1892 in Beverley. He was shown on the 1901 census as having been adopted by a Mr & Mrs Henry Smedley (Shoemaker), living at 67 Keldgate, Beverley. In the 1911 census, George was working as a tanner's labourer at Richard Hodgsons & Sons.

George joined the 5th Yorkshire Regiment as a Private. He arrived in France with his Battalion, in the spring of 1915 and they were located to the north east of Ypres, in late April. The Battalion was involved in the Battle of St Julien 24 Apr-4 May 1915 and it is around this time that George suffered from gas poisoning. He was repatriated to the UK and hospitalised in Middlesex, suffering from gas poisoning in Jul 1915. George was awarded the British War, Victory and 15 Star medals.

He survived the war and married Edith Goodhand in Glanford Brigg, Lincolnshire in 1926. Edith died 1948, aged 57. George did not re-marry and died in 1964, aged 72. He is buried in the churchyard of St Nicholas, Ulceby, Lincolnshire.
