Date2015
DescriptionWork completed by volunteer includes the following information:

Edward Melbourne was born in Beverley in 1894, the youngest of four sons of John William and Mary Therese Melbourne. In 1901 he and his brother John were staying with his widowed grandmother and aunt and uncle at Norwood Walk, Beverley. By 1911 he was back living with his parents and brother, Charles at 14 Well Lane, Beverley.

Edward was working as a farm labourer when he enlisted in the 5th Battalion Yorkshire Hussars aged 20, regiment number 1588. The 5th Battalion formed part of the 150th Brigade of the 50th division when they landed at Boulogne on 17 Apr 1915. They arrived just as the Germans had attacked Ypres using gas for the first time. The company was involved in the battle of St Julien, the battle of Frezenburg ridge and the battle of Bellewaarde Ridge, which is where Edward was wounded and died from his wounds aged 21.

Edward Melbourne's death was reported in the Beverley Guardian on 3 Jul 1915. He is commemorated on the St Mary's Roll of Honour, the East Riding Memorial in Beverley Minster and on the Beverley War Memorial.
