George was born in Beverley the 5 May 1894 and baptised at St Mary's church the 25 Nov 1894. His family lived in Silvester Lane, Beverley. His mother Mary (nee Tann) was from Nafferton and his father Isaac, a malt worker was from Kilnwick. George's family was a large one, with two brothers and five sisters. Before the war George became an apprentice bricklayer, his elder brother James Isaac was also in the same trade. In May 1915 George married Gertie Edmunds, also of Silvester Lane, Beverley. Her father, Robert, was a cab driver and groom. They lived with George's parents at 16 Silvester Lane.
George served as a Private in the 1/5 York Regiment, then in 1/5 York and Lancaster Regiment (Hallamshire Battalion), part of 3rd Brigade, West Yorkshire Division, which spent the war on the Western Front. On 8 Oct 1917 George was wounded for the third time and transferred back to hospital in Cambridge. The Beverley Guardian of 1 Dec 1917 noted this (unspecified) injury and added that, "he has also been in hospital three times suffering with his eyes", which could possibly be a reference to the effects of gassing. He was discharged from the military on 9 Apr 1919 and was awarded the War and Victory medal.
George lived with Gertie at 17 Morton Lane, Beverley, 1939 Register states he was a housepainter. He died aged 66 in 1960.
