James Metcalf was born the 26 Feb 1886, he lived in the parish of St Nicholas, Beverley with his father, James and his mother Isabel. He had one younger brother, Thomas born 1894 and a sister Florrie born 1895. In 1901 he was a house boy in a large house in Beverley Parks, Woodmansey. He married Frances Jane Whiffin in Beverley Minster, on 26 Nov 1910, they lived at 34 Keldgate, Beverley in the household of Joseph and Jane Anne Whiffin. By then he was a labourer in the Oil Cake Mills. They had a son Cyril born 28 Aug 1911.

James joined the Army the 8 Dec 1915, his army number was 44416 and his regiment the Machine Gun Corps. His Battalion was the 1st Reserve. He was reported missing in 1918 and then according to the Beverley Guardian 25 May he was reported to be a prisoner of war. He was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal on 15 Oct 1919.

According to the 1939 Register, William was the public house manager at the Nags Head in Routh near Beverley, living with his wife, Frances and his son Cyril. James died in 1962 aged 82.
