Thomas Majoribanks Macleod was born in 1893; one of six children, of Dr Murdoch Donald Macleod and his wife Isa Janet (nee Majoribanks). The children were born in Walkington and the family lived at the East Riding Asylum, Walkington where Dr Macleod was the Medical Superintendent from 1882 to 1906, when he resigned for reasons of ill health. Dr. Macleod died in 1908 and is buried in Walkington. In the 1911 census Thomas aged 17 and his brother Norman aged 15 are both shown as pupils at Giggleswick School, Settle.

Thomas served in the Army throughout the war in various regiments. He was attached to the 2nd ing's Own Scottish Borderers; 2nd Lieutenant with the Seaforth Highlanders; was transferred to the Highland Light Infantry as a Lieutenant, and in Jan 1916 was promoted to Captain. He was wounded by shrapnel in 1915 but not seriously and this was reported in the Beverley Guardian 3 Jul 1915. He was mentioned in despatches in Oct 1916 and he was awarded the British War and Victory medals.

Thomas pursued a career in the Civil Service in Nigeria throughout the 1920s. On his numerous trips back to England he stayed in various locations; Ravenscar, Scarborough, Isle of Lewis in Scotland and Carlisle. In 1925 he married Mary Dorothea Kelsick Wood in Kensington. She was the daughter of Kelsick and Caroline Wood of Carlisle. Thomas died at the age of 47 on 3 Jan 1931 in Nigeria at Kondura Hospital.
