John Lancaster was born in Aug 1882 in Beverley to John and Elizabeth Lancaster (nee Megson). The family lived in Harrison’s Yard off Tiger lane and his father was a groom. He had two brothers, David and Charles and three sisters, Susan Elizabeth, Christiana Mary and Annie Louisa. John was a butcher, he married Mary Ellen Spense on 7 Mar 1907 at St Nicholas Church. Their daughter Muriel was born on 29 Dec 1907. In 1911 the family was living at 7 Ash Terrace Grove, Holme Church Lane, Beverley.
John served with the Nottinghamshire & Derby Regiment and then the Labour Corps. He is pictured on the Beverley Guardian in Oct 1917. He was awarded the Victory & British medals. David his brother was killed whilst serving with the York and Lancaster regiment. In 1939 John lived in Leeds as a butcher’s manager. John died in Hull in 1970 aged 88 years.
