John Lumley was born in Beverley the 22 Aug 1882, son of John Henry and Emma Lumley (nee Webster). John was their youngest son and one of four children.
In early 1902 at Hull he joined the regular army. He had previously been in the 2nd Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment as a volunteer. He then joined the Northumberland Fusiliers as a private, serving in the UK from 1902 to 1904; he spent two years in South Africa before going to India. As a Lance-Corporal he served on the North West Frontier and was awarded the General Service Medal (with North West Frontier Clasp). In Jan 1910 he joined the Army Reserve and was with them until Jan 1914. At this time he worked in Hull as a tram conductor for the City Corporation Company.
On 5 Jul 1911 he married Emmie Elizabeth Burnett, at Beverley Minster. Their first child, Olive, was born in 1913, followed by Audrey born in 1924.
John volunteered for service as a private in the 10th Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment which was the 1st Hull Pals Battalion. In late Dec 1915 he was sent to Egypt to conduct guard duties along the Suez Canal. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star and the War and Victory medals.
After the war John and his family moved to Hull. In 1939 they were living on Holt Street and John was employed as a tram driver. His wife died in 1942. John died aged 80 on 26 May 1963 in Wilmslow, Cheshire
