Thomas Edmund Marsh Lyon was born in Hull in 1897. He was the eldest son of Thomas Marsh and Mary Lyon (Houfe). His father was a steward at the Conservative club in Beverley and the family lived in Ladygate, Market Place Beverley.
Thomas enlisted with the 5th Yorkshire regiment at the outbreak of war on 21 Aug 1914. His occupation at the time was a butcher’s assistant. He served in France from 17 Apr 1915 to Jun 1915 when he was wounded in action. Then from Oct 1916 to Jul 1917 when he was again wounded and from 1 Apr 1918 to 27 May 1918 when he was captured during the Battle of the Aisne and held as a prisoner of war until Oct 1918. He was finally discharged from the army on 28 Mar 1919 with general disabilities and was awarded the Silver war badge. He was also awarded the 15 Star, the British and Victory medals.
On 5 Nov 1921 Thomas married Annie Bowman at St Mary’s church Beverley. They had two children, Mary born in 1923 and Geoffrey in 1927. The family lived at Flemingate, Beverley.
On 14 Apr 1936, Thomas died suddenly at Hodgson’s recreation club Beverley where he had been steward. He was aged 38. He was buried at New Walk Cemetery, Beverley.
