David Johnson was born in Beverley the 27 Jan 1898 in Beverley, he was baptised the 26 Feb 1898 at St. Mary’s Church in Beverley. His Parents were Richard and Arabella Johnson. He had an older sister, Rachel and two older brothers, Richard and John. His father was a tanner’s labourer. They lived at 8 School Lane, Beverley in 1901. By 1911 the family were living at 15 School Lane, Beverley. By then there were three younger sisters, Arabel, Mary and Bessie and three younger brothers Dennis, Colin and Charles.
David enlisted into the Army on 8 Oct 1914, joining the Yorkshire Dragoons, his service number was 2847 and he then went into the Labour Corps also in 1914. His Battalion was the 850th Area Employment, 303rd RE 169th Labour Company. He joined the York and Lancaster Regiment in the 4th Reserve Battalion, his service number was 6556. David was posted abroad the 14 Jan 1917, embarking from Folkstone and disembarking in Calais on 15 Jan. He was wounded in the field on 23 Apr 1917 and was then posted to the Labour Regiment in Boulogne, and invalided back to England on 26 May 1918 to recover. He left the Army on 1 Mar 1919 and was awarded the British Medal and the Victory Medal.
David married Ellen Johnson, of Beverley, born 31 Dec 1906, in Sep 1926. They had two daughters, Sybil born the 21 Jul 1933 and Rita M born the 21 Oct 1938. In 1939 the family were living at 6 Dyer Lane, Beverley, David was employed as a leather helper in the Shipyard. His eldest daughter, Sybil was at school. David died in Hull in 1983 aged 85.
