John Douglas Johnson, was baptised the 20 Oct 1896 at St Mary's Church, Beverley, the second son of ten known children of Richard and Arabella Johnson of School Lane, Beverley. Two siblings died before the 1911 census. Arabella had been married previously and had 2 daughters from that marriage. John worked as a ship yard labourer before enlisting with the 5th Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment aged 16 years on the 21 Nov 1912 and served in France before being injured and discharged on 18 Nov 1915, he was awarded the Silver Medal. In addition he was also awarded the British War medal, Victory medal and 1915 Star.
He married Mary Emily Atkinson at St John's Church, Beverley the 24 Jan 1931 and in September they had a daughter Doreen, who died on 18 Nov 1932 aged 17 months. She is buried with her maternal grandmother at St Mary's church. John died in Jan 1985 in Beverley.
