John William Jackson was born in Beverley the 12 May 1899 and baptised at St Nicholas’ church the 29 Apr 1900, he was one of three children born to Benjamin and Sarah Elizabeth Jackson. Sarah died in Beverley in 1900. Benjamin married Frances in 1905, they had one child, Mildred, born 1906. The family initially lived in Sparkmill Terrace and later 27 St Andrew Street, Beverley became their long standing family home.
John enlisted in Beverley the 5 Jan 1915 and he was initially in the 2nd/5th Reserve Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. On 17 Jul 1916 he joined the 1st/5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment, however on 13 Jan 1917 John was found to be underage. He was switched on 3 Mar 1917 to the 2nd/9th Battalion of the Royal Scots and spent the rest of the war stationed in Ireland at the time following the Easter Rising of Apr 1916. He was based at Tralee and then Limerick. There is no record of John being awarded the War and Victory Medals presumably because Ireland was classified as being “home service”.
After the war John worked on the railways and lived in Hull. In 1925 he married Mabel Scott, they had two children Kenneth born 1925 and Roy born 1928. John died in Hull in 1978, aged 79. Mabel died in 1949. John is remembered today on the St Andrews Street Shrine in Beverley.
