Richard was born the 5 Jul 1894 in Beverley, one of ten children of Richard Johnson and Arabella (nee Lovell) of Beverley. He was baptised 28 Jul at St Mary's Church, Beverley. The family lived in School Lane, Walkergate, Beverley. Before the war Richard worked as a shipyard labourer.

Richard enlisted with the 6th Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment, and was part of the Balkan Campaign. The 6th Battalion landed in Sulva Bay, on the Aegean coast of Gallipoli, on 6 Aug 1915, in support of the Anzcac troops at the battle of Sari Bair. Richard was reported killed on 9 Aug 1915 at Dardanelles.

He is listed on the Helles Memorial near Sedd El Bahr in modern day Turkey. Richard was posthumously awarded the 15 Star, the Victory and British medals
