Date2015
DescriptionWork completed by volunteer includes the following information:

Herbert Jude was born in Beverley on 11 Apr 1879. Herbert was one of nine children born to John Jude and Harriet Bales who married in 1865. John Jude was a farm labourer, originally from Garveston, Norfolk; he later worked as a general labourer, latterly for Beverley Corporation. John remarried in 1886 after the death of Harriet and with his new wife, Margaret Ford had a further four children.

Herbert was brought up on School Lane, Walkergate, Trinity Lane and later Chantry Lane, Beverley. He is recorded on the 1911 census as lodging with his brother, Charles and his family, on Chantry Lane whilst employed as a coach wheel maker. There is evidence in Aug 1906 that he travelled to Canada for work. His younger brother, Harry and his family had emigrated to Canada in 1905 and were living in the Toronto area. Herbert was unmarried.

Herbert served in various battalions of the Yorkshire Regiment (The Green Howards). He was initially in the 5th Battalion, his service number 2157 suggests that he may have served in the TA with the 5th before the war as had many men from Beverley. Herbert later served with the 4th Battalion and then the 6th . He arrived in France on 18 Apr 1915 and would have been put into battle in the fighting around St Julien, near Ypres, at this time. In 1917 he would have taken part in actions at Messines and at Paschendaele in the Ypres Salient. It was in the latter area, and in unknown circumstances, that Herbert was seriously wounded and on 15 Oct 1917, at the age of 38, died of his unknown injuries. He was buried at Dozinghem Military Cemetery near Poperinghe, in Belgium. He received the War and Victory Medals as well as the 1914-15 Star. He is commemorated on the Hengate War Memorial in Beverley and on the East Riding Memorial in Beverley Minster. Herbert’s name is also on the Grovehill Road Street Shrine.
