Private Norman Algar was born in Slaidburn in the Ribble Valley in Lancashire in 1893, the son of William J Algar, schoolmaster of Wingate Durham and Jemima Algar of Sunderland. The 1901 England census shows that Norman had 4 siblings living with him in Lockington. They are Francis D, Constance, Sarah Ann, and Cecil. By 1911 Norman was living at 75 Spring Street, Hull where according to a Hull Daily Mail entry dated 30 Nov 1916 he was employed as a watchmaker apprentice and jeweller.
The Naval and Military Press of 2010 shows Norman was a private, no 3363, with the East Yorkshire regiment (1st/4th Battalion). He joined the regiment in 1915 and went to the front line in August of that year. His war medals include the Victory, British and 15 Star
Norman died of his wounds in hospital in France on 16 Nov 1916, aged 24. The graves registration report shows he was buried in the Dernancourt Communal Cemetery extension . Grave ref IV.C.35
