Vernon Appleton was born the 28 Feb 1889 in Beverley to John Robert Appleton and Isabella Wharton. He was baptised at St Mary’s Church, Beverley on the 12 Jun 1889. In 1891 the family were living at 1 Minster Moorgate, Beverley. John, was working as a register clerk for the East Riding County Council’s Register of Deeds.
Vernon enlisted into the army on the 2 Sep 1914, giving his age as 25 years and 6 months, his home address was 33 Grayburn Lane, Beverley. Vernon’s regimental number was No 2027 he served as a Private in the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. On the 29 May 1915 Vernon was transferred to the 24th Provisional Battalion, Company C. Two months later, he was discharged from the Army on the 24 Jul 1915 at Cramlington, Northumberland after serving 357 days on the ‘Home’ campaign.
After discharge, Vernon returned to his parent’s home at 33 Grayburn Lane, Beverley. He was unsuccessful in obtaining a military pension, but was awarded a Silver War Badge on the 3 Jan 1917.
In 1921, Vernon married Florence Marks a widow (nee Taylor) in Beverley. In 1939 they were living at 47 Mill Lane, Beverley, Vernon was working as a gas fitter at the Beverley Gas Works, and was part of the Air Raid Precaution (ARP) service. Vernon died aged 69 in 1958.
