Lawrence Arnott was born the 11 Aug 1892 at Leconfield, the son of William Wrangham Arnott, a bricklayer, and Charlotte (nee Hope). In 1911 Laurie was employed as a waggoner on the farm of Alexander Alfred Walker at Lockington. By early 1914 Laurie moved to Beverley and became a steam-roller driver for the local council. He married Ada Warriner of Mill Lane, beverley on the 6 Jun 1914 at St Mary's Church, Beverley, they moved to 5 Wood Lane.

Laurie Arnott enrolled in the East Yorkshire Regiment on 24 Jun 1916 with a medical classification of B2 - fit for garrison service abroad. Seventeen days later, on 11 Jul he disembarked at Le Havre, France as a member of the 16th Labour Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment and was employed on Lines of Communication duties. On 19 May 1917 the infantry labour battalions were absorbed into the Labour Corps and the 16th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment became 22nd Labour Company, Labour Corps. He was transferred on 28 May 1917 to 313 Road Construction Company of the Royal Engineers. Laurie survived the war and after being transferred to Class 'Z' Reserve on the 23 Mar 1919.

He resumed his pre-war job as a steam-roller driver for the East Riding County Council. St Catherine's Church, Leconfield has a memorial plaque which includes three Arnott brothers, John William (Royal Engineers), Lawrence (Labour Battalion) and Bertie (Canadians).

Laurie and Ada had seven children. Lawrence died on 11 Feb 1957, aged 64, Ada died in 1959.
