Christian Agerskow was born in Hull the 23 Nov 1896 and baptised at St Matthew’s church the 20 Dec 1896, the son of Emil Agerskow and Lilian (nee Stow). Lilian was originally from Wapping, London whilst Emil was from Sleswig, Denmark. He worked as a fisherman and later was a trawler skipper. Christian was brought up at 325 South Boulevard and then Cholmley Street, Hull. He became an apothecary’s apprentice.

Christian enlisted at Fulford Camp, York very early in the war as a Private in the East Riding of Yorkshire Imperial Yeomanry. They were sent to Egypt in 1916 and took part in the campaign to safeguard the Suez Canal from Turkish advances and then following the Turkish reversals in the campaign that extended northwards into the Sinai Desert, Gaza and Palestine. Christian was wounded in action in Gaza at Ali Muntar Hill. Members of the East Riding Yeomanry were switched to the Machine Gun Corps and sent to France in 1918, Christian was switched to the Dorset Yeomanry (Queen’s Own) in the Corps of Hussars. He was awarded the War and Victory Medals and left the army in May 1919.

Christian became a trawler skipper in Hull and in the Second World War achieved some notoriety in fishing too close to the Icelandic Coast. On 4 Jun 1928 he married Muriel Westoby at St Mary’s church in Beverley. They had two children, Nancy and Margaret and lived on Anlaby High Road, Hull. Christian died on 26 Apr 1969. He is remembered on the Norwood Street Shrine along with his four brothers.
