Emil was born in Hull on 5 Nov 1892 and baptised at St Barnabas’ Church on 15 Dec 1892, the son of Emil Agerskow and Lilian (nee Stow). Lilian was originally from Wapping, London whilst Emil was from Sleswig, Denmark. Emil was brought up on South Boulevard, Hull. In 1911 he was working as a grocery assistant at his cousin’s business in Ormesby, Middlesbrough. By the start of the war he was back with his parents at Cholmley Street, Hull and working at Briton and Co.
Emil served in the 1st/4th Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment and was rapidly promoted reaching the rank of Sergeant. He arrived in France on 17 Apr 1915 and was immediately sent to Ypres in Belgium. He took part in action at St Julien, Frezenburg Ridge and Bellewaarde Ridge. He was wounded at this time. The 1st/4th were then switched to the Somme in 1916. It was there on 9 Nov 1916 in the vicinity of Flers that Emil was killed in action. Emil was awarded the 1914-15 Star and the War and Victory Medals.
Emil is buried in Warlencourt British Cemetery on the Somme and commemorated on the Hengate War Memorial and the East Riding Regiments Memorial in Beverley Minster, and on the Norwood Street Shrine.
