Thomas Anthony and his younger brother, Charles Robert, both took part in WWI but the only specific information about them is taken from photographs which were published in the Beverley Guardian on 30 Dec 1916, when they were both said to be “At the Front”. Thomas was serving as a Driver with the RAMC, and Charles as a Driver with the ASC, both were awarded the British War and Victory Medals.
Thomas was born in Sproatley in 1885, the son of Robert Anthony, of Atwick, a farm worker and Ada, nee Duke, from Aldbrough. In 1901, aged 15, Thomas was working on a farm at Bishop Burton, employed as a horseman. By 1911, aged 25, Thomas was working as a male nurse in the East Riding Lunatic Asylum, Walkington, a career he returned to after his war service. In 1923, Thomas married Mildred Della Newbound, they had three children, Eric Bernard born 1924, Audrey born 1926, and Muriel E born 1932. In 1939 Thomas, Mildred and family were living at 2 Minstermoorgate, Beverley, and Thomas was a charge nurse at the Asylum. Thomas died in 1981, aged 95, Mildred died in 1985 aged 89.
