William Adkins was born in Arnold 24 Apr 1892 and baptised at Skirlaugh 18 Apr 1894. He was the youngest of the six sons born to Thomas Jackson Adkins and Sarah Levitt. Thomas was originally from Hull and Sarah from Long Riston where they married in 1879. William was a farm worker in Etton and was a wagonner on the Headley Farm in the village in 1911. William married Ida Mary Hollingsworth of Etton at Beverley Registry Office 14 Aug 1915.

William enlisted 10 May 1915 at the Central Recruiting Office in Hull and was mustered for service on 13 Sep of that year. He left for France 30 Dec 1915 serving as a driver in the Royal Field Artillery, specifically in the 32nd “Hull” Divisional Ammunition Column that was tasked with bringing ammunition up to the front line. The 32nd (often called the 33rd) was drawn in particular from the Hull City Police force and the Tramways departments. William’s records indicate that in Mar 1917 he contracted dysentery and was hospitalised at Edgbaston in Birmingham for 52 days, not returning to France until mid July 1917. He was awarded the War and Victory medals.

After the war William lived in Etton, he had two children Ida born Mar 1918 and Walter born Jan 1920. William died in Hull in 1938.
