Description | Work completed by volunteer includes the following information:
Charlotte Jackson was born in 1895, the second daughter of John Charles Jackson and his wife Maria Anne of Walkergate, Beverley. In 1911, aged 16, Charlotte was employed as a milliner, she was a member of the Beverley Swimming Club, and in the Beverley & East Riding Recorder , 29 Sep 1917, it was reported that Alderman Wood referred to 'the brave action of Miss Lottie Jackson who had risked her life at Withernsea recently'.
This referred to an incident which had occurred on 22 Aug. A well-known actress, Olga Audre (Mrs. Winpenny), was on holiday at North Cliff Farm, Withernsea with her son and two nieces, Gladys and Leila. She had attempted to rescue her eleven year old son, Arthur, when he and Leila got into difficulties in the sea, but, while trying to get him to safety, Mrs Winpenny collapsed and was drowned. Two soldiers and Geoffrey Huckvale, a visitor to Withernsea, managed to bring Mrs. Winpenny and Arthur to shore, along with Gladys, who had tried unsuccessfully to reach Leila. This was all widely reported in the newspapers at the time: “In the meantime, Miss Jackson, daughter of Mr J C Jackson, Walkergate, Beverley, who is visiting Withernsea, had entered the sea, fully dressed, and rescued the girl, Leila.” The Beverley Guardian gave a full report on 25 Aug 1917, and a further report, along with Charlotte’s photograph appeared on 16 Nov 1918
Charlotte married Norman Gray Abbot jnr in St. Mary’s Church, Beverley, on 20 Oct 1917. Norman was an Artificer serving in the Machine Gun Corps. Norman survived the war and in civilian life was employed as a gas & water fitter working for the Beverley Corporation. Charlotte and Norman had three children, Gordon, Joyce and Christine, and the 1939 Register shows the family living at 90 Hull Road, Beverley.
Charlotte died in 1970, aged 75, and was survived by Norman who died in 1982, aged 96.
