Alec Atkinson was born near Hornsea on 17 Apr 1894. In 1901 his family was living in Holme Church Lane, Beverley. His father Edward James Atkinson was born in 1852 and his mother was Clara Lucille was born in 1862. His siblings were Edward, Ida, Daisy Muriel, George Augustus and Florence Ethel.
In 1911 the family was living at Elloughton Villas, Grovehill Road. Two more children had been added to the family, James and Marjorie Annieand Alec was working as a printer`s apprentice.
A report in the Beverley Guardian of 11 Mar 1916 referring to Alec`s war service noted that he had been a member of the Old Grammarians Church Lads Brigade. He had joined the Army on 23 Apr 1912 and eventually became a Corporal Drummer in the 5th Yorkshire Regiment. He was discharged on 12 Sep 1916 due to wounds received. He was awarded the Silver War Badge.
Alec married Hilda Cottam on 5 Jul 1921 in Beverley. By 1939 they were living at 8 Chorley Old Road, Bolton, Lancashire. Alec was employed as a newspaper linotype operator and Hilda as a cake maker. They had one son Brian born 1933. John died on 20 Dec 1967 aged 73 in Bolton. Hilda died in 1981.
