Corporal John William Andrew was killed in action in 20 Mar 1918, being hit by a shell. An article in the Hull Daily Mail of 4 Apr 1918 records that his officer stated “he was one of the best of soldiers and he was more than sorry to have lost him”
John William Andrew was born in 1895 in the village of Sigglesthorne, the son of John and Georgina Andrew (nee Myers) one of eight children. He was baptized at Sigglesthorne 7 Apr 1895. The 1911 census shows John’s occupation as a golf labourer.
John's medal card shows he enlisted in the Royal Munster Fusiliers on 7 Aug 1915 and then served with the Machine Gun Corps. He served in France for over two years. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre military decoration for bravery posthumously, given to his father at the East Yorkshire Camp in Sep 1918. John is buried at Minty Farm Cemetery, Belgium.
