TitleAbstracts of reports of indictable offences
Date1931-1946
DescriptionA series of abstracts of reports of indictable offences arranged in order of crime number and then by reference number allocated by Headquarters and written by hand on the top of each document. A fairly complete series of reports appears to have survived for 1940.

The abstracts of reports of indictable offences contain details relating to type of offence, date and time of offence, when reported to the police, and the police officer to whom the offence was reported. The abstracts also describe the nature of the offence, where it was committed, the aggrieved party and the persons who reported and discovered the offence respectively. May also include statements and a constable's report, as well as other documents and correspondence concerning the offence.

At some point in 1940 (the exact date is unclear), the form on which crimes were reported changed its name from 'abstract of report of indictable offence' to 'crime report'. This document gives information regarding the personal details of the aggrieved party, the officer to whom the offence was reported, time and date discovered, reported, and committed, and more specific details about the nature of the offence, including point of entry, means employed, vehicles used, evidence left behind etc. The report continues to list property stolen, description of suspect(s), property found on prisoner at scene (if any), particulars of warrant or summons if issued, and personal details of any prisoners arrested. The crime report usually also contains a report by the officer showing police action, a constable's report, crime complaint, and a supplementary crime report. In addition, there may be statements and correspondence relating to the offence.

These files include crime numbers: 3/44 larceny of pedal cycles; 3/45 larceny from unattended vehicles; 3/46 larceny from shops and stalls; 3/47 larceny from automatic machines and meters; 3/48(2) theft of motor vehicles; 3/49(1) general larceny; 3/49(5) stealing electricity; 3/50(1) obtaining goods etc by false pretences; 3/53(5) obtaining credit by fraud; 3/54(1) receiving stolen goods; 3/57 malicious damage to property; 3/58 forgery and uttering; 4/56 arson; 6/66(331)/1 larceny from a crashed German aeroplane; 6/66(331)/2 other offences against the State and Public Order.
