Date1952
DescriptionIncludes plates showing extracts from historical documents.
AbstractAlthough the monasteries were dissolved by Henry VIII one community was set up by Mary Tudor but was dissolved by Elizabeth I. The rights of the community were transferred to some English monks living in France which were eventually expelled during the French Revolution. They returned to England and the community at the same time that Father Anselm Bolton had taken up residence at a lodge at Ampleforth which he handed over to the community on his death in 1802.
