AbstractOn 8 November 1800, His Imperial Majesty, Paul the First, Tsar of Russia decreed that all British shipping in the Baltic ports of his Empire should be placed under an embargo and that the crews should be removed from on board and taken by force into the interior of Russia. Over 200 British ships were impounded, amongst them were 45 from Whitby.
